Hunky Dory Sexy Rugby Ad

www.williamegan.ie

It reminds me of something you would see on tv show Ad Men….’Sex sells, as they light another cigarette in the boardroom’. Not much has changed really, anyone who has read a Metro Herald would recognize the same bunch of girls advertising something new each day.

Hunky Dory’s latest campaign featuring attractive female models playing rugby without a lot of clothes. Its not porn but it is controversial. It seems everyone is unhappy about it accept Hunky Dory themselves. I can only assume its sold lots of crisps.

The usual band of feminists and religious groups – Demeaning to Women etc. The IRFU are also outraged as the ads state ‘Proud supporters of Irish Rugby’. Hint of truth in that they sponsor Navan RFC but probably misleading as stated in the ad.

Personally I don’t see anything wrong with it. If you put an actual women’s rugby team in the ad there probably wouldn’t be any complaints. A big burly female hooker (rugby position) wouldn’t sell many crisps. Is it even breaking a taboo? I could give you a list of products that have used scantily clad girls to sell products. Have you read the Metro Herald. The National Lottery use girls in bikinis to advertise the jackpot…..this, a charity foundation, government supported business!

If you are going to ban it, ban it all! Ban the diet coke ad where office girls drool over a builder/maintenance guide. It can’t be one rule for some! I thought we had developed tougher skins than to be offended at hot girls playing rugby.

“A big burly female hooker (rugby position) wouldn’t sell many crisps.” This comment is disgraceful.

You have clearly never watched my team play rugby.

I don’t have an issue with selling products with sex; you’re right about the diet coke and the lottery, and about every single perfume on the market, but what these adverts do is sexualise women’s rugby in a way that is not acceptable.

I am sorry, I didn’t mean any disgrace with my comment, I was just stating that obviously Hunky Dory believe model girls with few clothes will sell them more crisps and get more publicity…..and they were right. Thanks for commenting.
